Dark spots can appear as signs of aging or traces of healed acne and can be difficult to treat if proper attention is not given at the right time. Fortunately, you only need to step into your kitchen to find some of the most effective options for fading dark spots and improving skin tone.
Aloe Vera–Aloe Vera is very gentle on the skin and can be used on all skin types. This plant offers some amazing skin and health benefits. In fact,it is one of the most effective methods for improving the appearance of dark spots.
You can easily extract this gel at home by cutting a leaf from Aloe Vera plant and peeling its outer layer. You will find the transparent gel inside along with some yellow sap. Wash this gel well to remove all the yellow residue and store this pure gel in an airtight container. Alternatively, you can use the gel available in the market to prevent the appearance of dark spots and lighten the already existing ones.
Gram flour(Besan) and Yogurt(Dahi)–Paste of gram flour and yogurt is helpful in reducing the dark spots that are caused by the sun. You can also add a pinch of turmeric to this paste as it has anti-inflammatory properties and reduces excessive melanin (an agent that is responsible for skin darkening) production. Yogurt is a natural cleanser and its cooling properties help in soothing the skin besides acting on the dark spots. This paste can be applied directly on the spots or can be used as a face pack to fade dark spots for a glowing and healthy looking skin.
Mix 1 tablespoon Gram Flour and 1 tablespoon Yogurt.Add a pinch of turmeric and make a smooth paste.This mixture should not be too thick.Apply evenly on the face and leave it for 30 minutes.Wash and follow with a moisturizer.
Lemon–Lemon acts as a natural bleaching agent and is useful in reducing dark spots. Dilute few drops of lemon juice with equal quantity of rose water and apply directly on the dark areas. You can also add honey to make it more effective.
Lemon works best on oily skin and its use should be restricted to once or twice a week. It is also important to note that lemon juice should be applied in evening as going out in the sun right after its use can burn your skin.
Papaya–Papaya is rich in nutrients and contains the enzyme papain which helps in treating several skin related issues besides boosting radiance. Regular use of papaya brightens the complexion, restores elasticity and improves uneven texture.
Mash few cubes of peeled papaya or blend these pieces along with some milk / water to make a smooth paste. Apply this mask and wash off once it is dry.
Orange Peel-Orange peel is rich in vitamin C and when applied in combination with curd or rose water helps in reducing dark spots. You can easily make orange peel powder by drying some orange peels and then making a fine powder in a blender. Mix a tablespoon of this powder with curd and apply on the face till it is dry. Wash off with lukewarm water. Orange Peel works gently to revitalize dull skin for a soft, smooth texture.When used diligently for a month, this mask is helpful in removal of dark spots from the skin.
Sunscreen– This is the most important step in your daily routine to minimize sun damage and getting rid of dark spots as without the regular use of sunscreen (daily application and reapplication every 2 hours) no treatment can help in lightening dark areas. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure to prevent dark spots from getting worse and always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun. If possible, avoid sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm.
