7 Essential Skincare Tips For Winters
We are deep into the winter season which essentially means relaxing in a cozy blanket and sipping hot chocolate. I am doing both these things right now as I am writing this post. Probably the best way to spend a chilly winter evening! After all, who doesn’t want to stay indoors when it is freezing outside? Our skin also hates this season, low temperatures along with dry winds steal every bit of moisture from the skin leaving it dull and lifeless.
Since we have to battle this dry climate for few more weeks, let’s focus on keeping our skin in good condition. It is important to follow a dedicated skincare routine in winters to keep it moist and healthy. While it is important to use products that provide deep nourishment, following some simple tips can give you glowing, gorgeous skin!
Skincare Tips For Winters
Use lukewarm water– A soak or a shower is a wonderful way of relaxing after a long, tiring day! However, when you fill your bathtub next time, ensure that the water is not too hot. While bathing in hot water may seem like a great idea, it is not good for the skin. Hot water dries out the skin by stripping it of its moisture. It is best to use lukewarm water and avoid long baths or showers.
Moisturize-Your skin starts asking for heavier moisturizers as soon as winters arrive. After all, it needs extra protection to fight off cold weather! Use a great moisturizer with an antioxidant-rich serum to keep your skin soft and fight free radical damage. Many of us forget to moisturize our neck and the rest of our body. Use a nourishing body lotion and body butter to moisturize your skin. The best time to use a lotion is right after the shower when the skin is still damp. You can also layer products, I prefer to apply few drops of oil over my body butter to keep my skin soft.
Don’t forget your sunscreen– Have you ditched the sunscreen due to cold and cloudy weather? While you may not see the sun in winters, its UV rays are present everywhere. In fact, they are as strong as they are in summers which makes the use of sunscreen very important. You should apply a sunscreen all year round to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. These rays are the leading cause of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin. Your best defense against the sun rays is a sunscreen with SPF 50 or more. Apply it 20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every 2 hours for adequate protection. If you are in your 20’s then using a sunscreen is the best way of delaying skin aging. Sounds good, Right?
Hydrate–It is common to not consume sufficient water in winters. which starts showing on the skin. Dry skin and chapped lips are indicators that you should increase your water intake. It is important to consume at least 8-10 glasses of water in a day. You should kick-start your day with a glass or two of warm water. It is a great habit to keep a water bottle in your bag when you step out of your house. Besides maintaining skin hydration, water is essential to flush out toxins from the body. No wonder it is considered as an elixir for the skin!
Humidifier–Trust me, your skin needs a humidifier in winters! Winter weather is dry and the use of internal heating makes things worse for the skin. Using a humidifier keeps the air around you moist and helps the skin retain its moisture. It is helpful for keeping skin hydrated and glowing even during peak winters. Besides its beauty benefits, a humidifier is also useful in treating dry throat, nose bleeds and chapped lips.
Exfoliate– Your skin needs to get rid of dead skin cells and impurities. The best way to do it is to use a gentle scrub. Always buy a scrub that is not very abrasive or you can even whip up your own face and body scrubs. You may like the DIY Green Tea Scrub, DIY Coffee Scrub, and DIY Epsom Salt Scrub recipes that I had posted a few days back. These DIY scrubs easy to make and leave the skin incredibly smooth. However, over exfoliating is one skincare mistake that you must avoid. Do not use a scrub more than once a week.
Take care of your hands and feet-Your hands and feet need a lot of attention during winters. Use a pumice stone in your bath to get rid of feet callus. Applying a foot cream and wearing warm socks can help in keeping your feet soft. Also pamper them occasionally with foot spas. You can make your own foot spa at home to relax after a long week.
Your hands also need extra love during this season. They can feel terribly dry without proper care and it is important to moisturize them well. Wear gloves when you are outdoors to protect your hands from the bitter cold. Use a moisturizer after you wash your hands. Apply a luxurious hand cream or a moisturizer when you sleep to wake up with softer hands.
Face Masks–Face masks are skin saviors and supply essential nutrients to the skin. They are important to treat skin concerns like aging, dryness, or dark spots. You can whip up some easy DIY face masks to pamper your skin in winters or buy products that are meant for your skin type.
Diet– A healthy and well-balanced diet is necessary for maintaining skin health. Ensure that you include several servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet for beautiful skin. Cutting down on sugar and junk food is also helpful in keeping skin young and problem free.
Not only are these skin care tips easy to follow but can ensure that you look flawless in winters. All you have to do is to stick to a proper skin care routine and invest in a good humidifier. Apart from this, consuming enough water is important for well-hydrated skin. Do not forget to use a sunscreen daily to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun!
