Quick question: Name a beauty ingredient that completes summer skincare. Cucumber is my pick! Yes, this humble vegetable which is used for making delicious salads is the beauty ingredient of my choice in summers. My summers are incomplete without daily consumption of cucumber, I mostly use it in salads and when I am tired, it makes the perfect pad to refresh my eyes. Also, it goes into my face masks to instantly refresh the skin. I also keep cucumber juice in my refrigerator and it acts as a wonderful DIY toner for the skin. Cucumber can be added to a number of DIY beauty recipes and it is a common ingredient found in many popular beauty products. What makes cucumber so special in skincare? Let’s find out!

Benefits of cucumber for skin:

Cucumber has an abundance of water and hydrates dull skin when used in face masks. It also soothes sunburnt or irritated skin and suits sensitive skin well. Since it contains Vitamin C, it has an important role in keeping the skin young. Some of the most important skin benefits of cucumber are:

Reduces suntan

Improves skin texture

Soothes the skin.

Contains antioxidants.

Hydrates the skin.

Now that we know the need for cucumber in skincare, what can be an effective way of using it in your beauty routine? The answer is simple- DIY cucumber face masks. If you are wondering how to whip up a quick face mask, then here are  some ‘cool as a cucumber’ DIY face masks that can revitalize your skin in no time:

Cucumber and tomato face mask

Blend half a cucumber to make a paste and add the juice of a tomato. Mix well and add one tbsp. honey. Spread this mixture on the face and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse well with plain water.

Like cucumber, tomato soothes sunburnt skin and works on suntan. Honey moisturizes and adds a subtle glow to the skin. This mask is perfect to pamper the skin on a humid, sunny day. You can use this mask thrice a week to see a visible improvement in your skin. If you are not sensitive to lemon, then you can add one tbsp. lemon juice instead of tomato juice and use this mask once a week. However, tomato is gentle and doesn’t irritate the skin which is why this mask can be used more frequently than a cucumber-lemon face mask.

Cucumber and yogurt face mask

Take half a cucumber and throw its pieces in a blender to make a smooth puree. Add one tbsp. yogurt and blend well. Apply it on the face for 20 minutes and rinse well.

Yogurt is one of the most beneficial skincare ingredients which suits most skin types. It contains lactic acid that gently exfoliates the skin and reveals brighter skin from within. It is a good moisturizer and has anti-aging properties. You can read more about the benefits of yogurt here and if you want to whip some quick yogurt face masks then you can refer to this post I had shared some time back.

Cucumber and aloe vera face mask

This one is a very summery face mask that can refresh the skin in no time. Blend together half a cucumber and one tbsp. aloe vera gel. Add one tbsp. rose water to this mixture and apply it on the face for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with plain water.

This cooling DIY face mask is the perfect choice to treat your skin after it’s exposure to the sun. Aloe vera, cucumber, and rose water soothe the skin and provide immediate relief. You can either use store-bought aloe vera gel for this mask or make it at home.
